Birth Doula Frequently Asked Questions

Learn How it Works!

What is a Birth Doula?

doula   ˈduːlə/   noun

A woman who gives support, help, and guidance to another woman during pregnancy and during and after the birth.

The world of birth has become a scary place for many of us as we are told terrible birth stories(especially once you are pregnant), we are only shown horrific births on TV….all of this birthing overload can leave you feeling confused and often scared of the unknown. As your birth doula, I will help you sift through the information and figure out what is most important to you for your birth. I will be there to provide the safe, loving and supported environment needed for a positive and empowered birth.

Do you provide a birthing pool for home births?

I do have a birthing pool that can be rented out upon request for £100. It is a small birthing pool and is only appropriate for the mother. If you would like your partner to join you in the water you will need to hire out a larger birthing pool. Please get in touch to discuss availability.

What is the role of a Birth Doula?

A doula is there to support the mother throughout her pregnancy and to support her in any way she chooses to labor. A birth doula also supports the mother’s partner throughout the journey.

When is the best time to book a Birth Doula?

It is better to book a doula as early as possible as this allows for lots of time to get to know each other, but with that said its never too late so please get in touch even if you are far along in your pregnancy.

What type of births do you support?

I support home births as well as hospital births. I am also more than happy to support in a Caesarean Section but this will, however, be dependent on the view of your obstetrician or midwife.

What Are the Benefits of Having a Birth Doula?

There are many benefits to having a doula present during your pregnancy and during and even after the birth of your baby. We have listed a few of them here:

1. A birth doula will help you feel informed about your birth choices and will help you follow your instincts, resulting in a  more empowered and positive birth.

2. A birth doula will ensure that your baby will arrive in a more tranquil, relaxed environment.

3. You are likely to have a more comfortable birth as a doula will have different methods to advise.

4. You are less likely to need medical intervention.

5. You will feel more supported with the continuation of care a birth doula provides throughout your pregnancy and birth.

6. The length of labour can often be much shorter when supported by a birth doula.
